About Us

We are the MAMLa Network
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has made significant efforts to ensure that women achieve higher levels of representation within the maritime sector. An example of this was the creation of the Women in Development Programme in 1988, under which Women in Maritime Associations (WIMA) have been established in Africa, the Arab States, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America, and the Pacific — covering 152 countries and 490 dependent territories — as platforms to discuss gender issues, share experiences and best practices, receive training, and enhance the implementation of IMO instruments. In line with the Women in Development Programme, the Network of Women from Maritime Authorities – Red MAMLa was established in December 2017 through the Valparaíso Declaration, during the First Regional Conference: “Women in Maritime Authorities of Latin America and Central America”, held in Chile from December 13 to 15, with the participation of 19 Member States.

Our Foundations:
At Red MAMLa, we work on action plans that bring together Maritime Authorities, Government Entities, Private Companies, International Organizations, Associations, and NGOs from around the world to promote and undertake concrete actions that create greater opportunities for women in leadership roles, visibility, training, recognition, and empowerment, in alignment with the United Nations 2030 Agenda, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5).
- a) Establish mechanisms for cooperation and information exchange.
- b) Promote the reduction of gender stereotypes.
- c) Disseminate and expand the work of the Network.
- d) Ensure equal access to education.
- e) Training program for the implementation of IMO instruments.
- f) Generate employment opportunities and professional development.
- g) Promote the meritorious occupation of high-impact managerial or operational positions.
- h) Harmonize regulations, institutional policies, directives, parameters, guidelines, or criteria related to education, employment, and decision-making.

Strategic Network
Red MAMLa was born from the support and vision of our Parent Organization, the International Maritime Organization (IMO), which through the Women in Maritime (WIMA) Programme laid the foundations for the development of our mission, vision, and core values. We are part of a group of Sister Associations (WIMAs) around the world that work in parallel toward a common goal: to promote gender equality and the empowerment of women in the maritime sector.
Over the years, various institutions have joined this voyage, becoming our Strategic Partners, with whom we co-create projects aimed at achieving greater collective impact on the role of women in the industry, opening up technical and leadership opportunities.
