URUGUAY PAYS TRIBUTE TO WOMEN IN THE MARITIME SECTOR ON THEIR INTERNATIONAL DAY
As part of the International Day for Women in Maritime 2026, on May 19, a day of exchange and reflection was held at the Naval School of Uruguay, organized by the National Maritime Authority under the theme promoted by the International Maritime Organization (IMO): “From Policy to Practice: Advancing Gender Equality for Maritime Excellence.”
The event brought together representatives from public institutions, the private sector, international organizations, and associations linked to the maritime, port, and logistics sectors, establishing itself as a space for dialogue on the progress and challenges related to gender equality within the maritime industry.
During the event, Commander (CP) Macarena Cladera, representative and honorary member of the MAMLa Network, participated with a presentation focused on the evolution and strengthening of the regional network, highlighting the work carried out in collaboration with the International Maritime Organization and the various regional Women in Maritime associations.

Her presentation addressed topics related to institutional strengthening, technical cooperation, specialized training, female leadership, and capacity building within maritime administrations in Latin America and the Caribbean. It also highlighted the process of updating the MAMLa Network’s regional strategy, aligned with the IMO Global Strategy for Women in Maritime Associations for the 2024–2029 period.
The presentation also emphasized the current challenges facing the sector, particularly regarding the creation of more inclusive, safe, and sustainable work environments, referencing international progress in the prevention of harassment and violence within the maritime field.
Likewise, reflections arising from recent activities held at the IMO headquarters in London were shared, emphasizing the need to transform gender equality commitments into concrete actions within maritime organizations.
