May 18 | INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR WOMEN IN MARITIME

Every May 18, the International Day for Women in Maritime is celebrated.

This date was adopted during the 32nd General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held in December 2021 through Resolution 1170. Its main purpose is to highlight the professional contributions of women in the maritime and port sectors and to encourage greater female participation in the industry.

Likewise, the initiative seeks to promote the recruitment, retention, and long-term employment of women in the maritime sector, in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality.

By establishing this observance, the IMO reaffirms its commitment to supporting women’s work by addressing the current gender imbalance in the maritime sector and continuing to promote initiatives that help the industry progress while supporting women in achieving representation that reflects the expectations of the 21st century.
