June 8 | WORLD OCEANS DAY
On June 8 each year, people around the world celebrate World Oceans Day. This day invites us to reflect on the importance of marine ecosystems and the need to protect them from growing environmental threats.
Initially proposed during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the date was officially adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 2008. Since 2009, it has been a key opportunity for global awareness.
Oceans cover more than 70% of the planet’s surface and are the primary source of life on Earth. They harbor most of the world’s biodiversity and generate at least 50% of the oxygen we breathe.
In this context, the theme of World Oceans Day 2026, “Reimagine,” suggests a significant change in our perception of our relationship with the sea.
For decades, the oceans have been perceived as distant and inexhaustible resources. However, scientific evidence today shows that their health is directly linked to our own survival.
Reimagining means recognizing that the ocean is integral to our daily lives. It is present in the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the climate balance that sustains our societies. It also means shifting from an extractive mindset to one of shared responsibility, making the conservation and restoration of marine ecosystems a priority.
Caring for the ocean is not just an option; it is an essential condition for life on the planet.
