WorldMaritimeDay2025 | MESSAGE FROM THE IMO SECRETARY-GENERAL

Under the theme ‘Our ocean, our obligation, our opportunity’, the International Maritime Organization celebrates World Maritime Day. In his commemorative message, IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Domínguez emphasizes the urgent need to preserve our oceans.
“The oceans sustain life on Earth as we know it. They allow us to breathe and regulate our climate. The oceans also bring food to our table, connect people between continents, and provide world maritime routes for ships, which transport 80% of world trade.
But our oceans are in danger. Plastic pollution, rising temperatures, acidification, overfishing. Our oceans are fighting to withstand human pressure.
The deterioration of the oceans is not a coincidence, but a consequence of human activity. But that also means that we have the power to reverse it. It is our obligation to work together to reduce pollution, protect marine life, and adopt sustainable habits.
Protecting and restoring the oceans is not just a duty. It is our opportunity to build a healthier planet, stronger economies, and a safer future for future generations”.
