As part of his working visit to Mexico, Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Arsenio Dominguez Velasco, met with members of the Network of Women of Latin American Maritime Authorities (Red MAMLa). The meeting provided a valuable forum for dialogue and exchange, focusing on progress, challenges, and opportunities to strengthen women’s participation in the maritime and port sector.

During the meeting, participants highlighted the importance of continuing to create conditions that enable greater participation of women across the various areas of maritime activity, while also promoting their professional development and their involvement in leadership and decision-making roles.

The IMO Secretary-General recognized the progress Mexico has made in promoting the inclusion and visibility of women in the sector and underscored the value of initiatives that foster the exchange of experiences and collaboration among maritime authorities across the region.

The meeting with Red MAMLa also provided an opportunity to strengthen cooperation and share experiences on initiatives being carried out across Latin American countries to promote equal opportunities, training, and the professional growth of women who are part of the maritime community.

Women’s participation is a fundamental component of the future of the maritime sector. Strengthening their presence in technical, operational, administrative, and managerial positions contributes to more diverse and inclusive institutions that are better equipped to respond to the challenges of an industry undergoing constant transformation.

In this regard, the IMO reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to promote initiatives that support the full and effective participation of women, as well as the development of women leaders who can contribute to building a more inclusive, sustainable, and competitive maritime and port sector.

Through this meeting, Mexico reaffirmed its commitment to continuing to promote spaces for dialogue, cooperation, and participation for women in the maritime sector, strengthening regional collaboration and moving toward a maritime community with greater opportunities for all.
