WATERWAYS: IMPACT AND PROGRESS IN THE WATER TRANSPORTATION OF VENEZUELA

By: Germán Gómez Larez. Captain of the Bolivarian Navy and Vice President of the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces.

The waterways represent navigable routes in the aquatic spaces, which are important to promote the economic integration and the social development of their areas of influence; That is why the National Institute of Aquatic Spaces (INEA), Bolivarian of Ports (BOLIPUERTOS), National Institute of Canalizations (INC), National Docks and Shipyards C.A. (DIANCA), Venezuelan Navigation Corporation C.A. (VENAVEGA), Consolidated of Ferrys C.A. (CONFERRY) and another entities that make up the Great Transportation  Mission Venezuela executes the National Waterway Plan, with the objective of generating new transportation alternatives for the population, boosting the economy of the regions and strengthening the development of the naval industry.

The National Plan for Waterways contemplates the development of waterways that allow the interconnection between different populations, both national and international, for the transport of personnel and cargo, for which the INEA works in an articulated manner with the respective entities, under the in order to activate the development of the fluvial, lacustrine and maritime navigation channels of the country.

In November 2020, the Carupano- Porlamar route was inaugurated, later in 2021, six more routes were activated: Cumaná-Araya, Maracaibo-Cabimas, Maracaibo-Los Puertos de Altagracia, La Guaira-Los Roques, San Fernando de Apure-Puerto Manuel Ezequiel Bruzual and Puente María Nieves-Puerto Fluvial de Diamantico, they are being covered by personnel water transport vessels (TAP) built in national shipyards, as well as the incorporation and adaptation of some vessels with private alliances, thus directly benefiting more than 400,000 inhabitants, among the States: Sucre, Nueva Esparta, Zulia, Apure, La Guaira and Los Roques Archipelago.

An outstanding aspect in the midst of the activation of the waterway routes has been the support that the Venezuelan aquatic authority has given to women, since there is currently a Captain of a Personnel Aquatic Transport Vessel (TAP) in the "Playa Colorada" boat, fulfilling the Cumaná - Araya route and having five crew members under its command; It is the Second Deck Officer and Maritime Engineer Victoria Chinea Cordova, 34 years old, graduated from the Caribbean Maritime University in 2012, who is responsible for moving a total of eighty-four passengers on the assigned route, being this experience for her a challenge and at the same time a privilege for being the first Captain of this type of vessel in Venezuela.

In this way, the gateway to South America reveals the impact and progress that the development of the National Waterway Plan has entailed, by establishing safe navigation routes that allow a multimodal interconnection to take advantage of the country's extensive aquatic network, as well as how to promote the incorporation of women in the maritime and port sector; all contributing to the strengthening of aquatic spaces and in turn contributing to the social, economic and cultural well-being of the population; confirming once again that we are... Committed to the Blue Venezuela!
