The Oriental Republic of Uruguay has a coastline of 1,400 kilometers, consisting of the Uruguay River, the Río de la Plata, and the Atlantic Ocean, and jurisdiction over the continental shelf extending up to 350 nautical miles.

It has 8 cargo-handling ports across the country, the main one being the Port of Montevideo, which, located on the Río de la Plata, is geographically positioned as one of the main cargo transport routes in MERCOSUR.

The National Naval Prefecture is the National Maritime Authority responsible for safety, protection, and prevention of pollution from ships.

NATIONAL NAVAL PREFECTURE

It is the body competent in implementing and overseeing compliance with international conventions on maritime safety and marine pollution.

Maintain public order, exercise control over navigation safety as the Police Authority in the Maritime, Riverine, and Lacustrine areas under the jurisdiction of the National Navy, develop policies for the preservation of the aquatic environment—especially in combating pollution—and participate in the registration and flagging of vessels, in order to contribute to the Navy’s mission.

To remain a key component and active contributor to the development of Maritime Uruguay, providing services and collaborating closely with state agencies, the maritime community, and international partners in economic, scientific, and cultural activities that meaningfully support this development.
