With a coastline of 1,288 km, the Dominican Republic borders the Atlantic Ocean to the north, the Caribbean Sea (or Antilles Sea) to the south, and the Mona Passage to the east. It has 19 port facilities that handle approximately 10 million tons annually.

NAVAL COMMAND OF PORT CAPTAINCY AND MARITIME AUTHORITY
The first captaincy in the Americas was established in the city of Santo Domingo in 1511, under the name of the General Captaincy of Santo Domingo, and was commanded by Don Diego Colón. From this captaincy, the Spanish Crown directed all Caribbean conquest expeditions, until it was later moved to the city of Cartagena de Indias.
During the Haitian occupation, some vessels operating at the Santo Domingo dock were used for transporting goods; three of them were made available to form the first naval squadron of the emerging Navy (today the Dominican Republic Navy), which staged the emblematic Naval Battle of Tortuguero on April 15, 1844, achieving a victorious outcome.
During the Trujillo dictatorship, the Port Captaincy of Santo Domingo experienced significant growth due to the dynamism of maritime trade, particularly in the export of sugar, bananas, and other products, as well as the establishment of the first Dominican merchant fleet.
On August 21, 2019, through General Order No. 016-2019 issued by the General Commander of the ARD, the current formation of the Naval Command of Port Captaincy and Maritime Authority, ARD, was approved as the body responsible for exercising functions in its capacity as a Coastal State, Flag State, and Port State in the Dominican Republic.
As the National Maritime Authority, to ensure compliance with laws and international agreements in the aquatic, coastal, and port areas of the Dominican Republic, in its capacity as a coastal state, flag state, and port state authority.
To be recognized nationally and internationally as the leading captaincy in the control and monitoring of activities carried out in the aquatic environment and the coastal-marine zone, through modern and efficient management that serves all users and ensures a sustainable environment of safety and protection.
