Despite being landlocked, Paraguay connects to the Atlantic Ocean through its two main rivers, the Paraguay and the Paraná. The Paraguay River is 2,600 km long and navigable for most of its length.
Maritime and port activities are managed by the General Naval Prefecture.
The General Naval Prefecture’s main functions include implementing current legislation, supervising or controlling port activities, ensuring safety in maritime and river navigation, and protecting the aquatic environment.
To exercise the defense, surveillance, and safeguarding of riverine interests, protect fishery resources and the riverine environment, enforce international agreements, laws, and national regulations, in order to contribute to the Paraguayan Navy.
To become an operational and modern unit, adaptable to technological advancements, equipped with highly trained human resources, aimed at enhancing navigation safety through river policing and the protection of the nation’s natural resources.
