The Republic of Panama borders the Caribbean Sea to the north and the Pacific Ocean to the south, totaling 2,950 km of coastline, where its 48 national ports are located, including state ports (29) and concessioned ports (19), with a container movement recorded in 2019 of 7,347,000 TEUs.
The most relevant maritime ports and terminals are: Port of Balboa, Panama International Terminal, Manzanillo International Terminal, Cristóbal – Panama Ports Company, Colon Container Terminal, Petroterminal de Panamá, and Colón 2000.
Its mountainous territory is interrupted by the Panama Canal basin, the interoceanic waterway that connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific and is managed by the Panama Canal Authority, while maritime and port activity in the rest of the Panamanian Isthmus is under the responsibility of the Panama Maritime Authority.
