September 24 | WORLD MARITIME DAY
World Maritime Day was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1978 to highlight the importance of international shipping and draw attention to key aspects of its development, including maritime safety and security and the prevention of pollution from ships.
The observance is held each year on the last Thursday of September, when the international maritime community focuses on a specific theme related to IMO’s work and objectives.
In 2026, World Maritime Day is observed on 24 September, under the theme “From Policy to Practice: Powering Maritime Excellence”, adopted by IMO for the 2026–2027 period.
