MEMBERS OF THE MAMLa NETWORK PARTICIPATE IN IMO REGIONAL WORKSHOP ON MARITIME NAVIGATION SAFETY IN PERU

From October 26 to 30, 2026, the Subregional Workshop on Ship Routing Systems and Ship Reporting Systems is being held in Lima, Peru. The workshop is organized by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), in cooperation with the General Directorate of Captaincies and Coast Guard of Peru (DICAPI) and Spain’s Jovellanos Centre.

The activity aims to strengthen participants’ knowledge and technical capabilities in the areas of ship routing and ship reporting systems, promoting the implementation of measures that contribute to improving navigational safety, preventing accidents, and protecting the marine environment.

Throughout the workshop, participants address international regulatory frameworks and procedures for the design, establishment, and updating of these systems, in accordance with the provisions of the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS). The programme also includes risk assessment tools, vessel traffic services, and practical exercises aimed at developing proposals for submission to the IMO.

The workshop includes the participation of two members of the Network of Women of Latin American Maritime Authorities (Red MAMLa), who are contributing in their respective professional capacities.

Representing Uruguay, Lieutenant Bettina Santana, Alternate Representative of Red MAMLa, is participating in the technical training sessions. Meanwhile, Commander Karina Sophia Valdivia Segura, Alternate Member of Red MAMLa for Peru, is contributing to the organization of the workshop as part of the host Maritime Authority’s organizing team.

The workshop provides an opportunity for technical cooperation and knowledge exchange, aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the region’s Maritime Authorities, particularly in response to the challenges posed by increasing maritime traffic and the need for increasingly safe and efficient navigation systems.

The participation of both professionals highlights the presence and contributions of women from Latin American Maritime

Authorities in specialized training and international cooperation forums. Through their respective roles and responsibilities, they contribute to strengthening maritime safety throughout the region.
