The Network of Women’s Associations in the Maritime Sector continues to grow. On June 24, the official launch of the Women in Maritime Association Europe (WIMA Europe) took place in Batumi, Georgia. The initiative, established under the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Gender Programme, aims to strengthen the participation, leadership, and visibility of women in the maritime industry.

The launch ceremony brought together representatives from governments, industry, academia, and international organizations for a day dedicated to discussing the challenges and opportunities facing women in the maritime sector. During the event, WIMA Europe representatives presented the vision and strategic objectives of the new association, emphasizing collaboration, professional development, networking, and the promotion of women’s leadership.

The event also featured a panel discussion on the role of women in the maritime sector, addressing topics such as human capital development, gender equality, innovation, and the future of maritime professions. The panel included experts from maritime administrations, academia, the shipping industry, ports, and the logistics sector.

With the establishment of WIMA Europe, there are now nine regional Women in Maritime Associations (WIMA) created under the IMO Gender Programme, further strengthening an international network that promotes cooperation, the exchange of experiences, and capacity building to advance women’s participation in the maritime sector.

The Network of Women from Maritime Authorities of Latin America (MAMLa Network) is part of this global network as one of the regional associations established under the IMO Gender Programme. Since its creation, the Network has worked to foster collaboration and create opportunities that support the comprehensive development of women affiliated with maritime authorities across Latin America, while promoting capacity building and leadership throughout the region.

The MAMLa Network warmly welcomes the establishment of WIMA Europe, as it represents another important step toward strengthening the international community of women in the maritime sector. The addition of a new regional association expands opportunities for intercontinental cooperation, encourages the exchange of best practices, and helps build an even stronger network committed to a more diverse, inclusive, and sustainable maritime sector.
