Chile

Chile es un país Tricontinental, constituido por tres zonas geográficas:

Chile Continental, que comprende una franja en la costa occidental del Cono Sur de Sudamérica, entre el segmento más alto de la Cordillera de los Andes y el Océano Pacífico hasta el paso Drake al sur,

Chile Insular, que corresponde a un conjunto de islas en el océano Pacífico sur, el archipiélago de Juan Fernández y las islas Desventuradas, la isla Salas y Gómez; y la isla de Pascua, ubicadas en Oceanía; y

El Territorio Chileno Antártico, el cual es una zona de la Antártica entre los meridianos 53° O y 90° O sobre la cual Chile reclama soberanía, prolongando su límite meridional hasta el Polo Sur.

Chile tiene una costa de 6.435 km de longitud y ejerce derechos exclusivos y soberanía sobre su espacio marítimo, llamado Mar Chileno. Este comprende cuatro zonas: el Mar Territorial, la Zona Contigua, la Zona Económica Exclusiva y la correspondiente a la Plataforma Continental.

Cuenta con 95 puertos (15 estatales de uso público y 80 privados) movilizando aproximadamente un total de 140 millones de toneladas anuales; siendo Valparaíso y San Antonio los principales puertos de carga de mercancías que pasa por el país.

The Maritime Authority of the country is under the responsibility of the Directorate General of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine.

Created by Decree Law on August 30, 1953, the Directorate General of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine has as its main functions the protection of Human Life at Sea, the protection of the Aquatic Environment and Marine Natural Resources, the regulation of maritime–port activities, and the enforcement of national laws and international agreements in force.

ORGANIC DEPENDENCE

DIRECTEMAR reports to the Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Navy, which in turn reports to the Ministry of National Defense.

It serves as the State’s highest Maritime Authority and holds exclusive and excluding powers in this field. Furthermore, in carrying out its international functions as the State’s representative, it performs these duties in accordance with the foreign policy established by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Directorate General of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine is the high-level body of the Chilean Navy whose mission is to ensure compliance with current laws and international agreements, to provide safety in navigation, protect human life at sea, preserve the aquatic environment and marine natural resources, and oversee the activities carried out within the maritime area under its jurisdiction, with the purpose of contributing to the Nation’s maritime development.
