SMART-C WOMEN: TRAINING THAT BOOSTS FEMALE LEADERSHIP IN THE MARITIME SECTOR

The International Maritime Organization (IMO), in collaboration with the Republic of Korea, continues to strengthen women’s participation in the maritime sector through the SMART-C Women Project, an initiative that promotes gender equality through specialized training and professional development.

In March 2026, the program’s largest cohort took place, bringing together 40 professionals from countries across Asia and the Pacific. They participated in online training sessions delivered by experts from the World Maritime University. The program focused on three key areas: decarbonization, digitalization, and gender empowerment, enhancing both technical competencies and leadership skills.

SMART-C Women aims to address the longstanding challenges women face in accessing and advancing professionally in an industry traditionally dominated by men. Through its activities, including training, international networking, and scholarship opportunities, the project contributes to greater equity and diversity in the sector, in line with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 5 on gender equality.

Outstanding participants will also be invited to an in-person phase in the Republic of Korea, where they will deepen their knowledge and apply what they have learned in their respective countries.

The IMO, through the development of initiatives like this, reaffirms its position and commitment to consistently promoting the strengthening of female leadership in the maritime sector, creating concrete opportunities to move toward a more inclusive, innovative, and sustainable industry.
