WORLD MARITIME THEME 2022: "NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR GREENER SHIPPING"

The 2022 World Maritime Theme aims to focus on the importance of working towards a sustainable maritime sector, rebuilding the post-pandemic world in a greener way. It also aims to delve into specific themes related to the promotion of inclusive innovation and the adoption of new technologies to support the green transition of the maritime sector.

In this regard IMO Secretary Kitack Lim noted that "...new technologies for greener shipping also provide an opportunity to showcase maritime innovation, research and development, and the demonstration and deployment of best practices, including innovative financial and support solutions."

He also emphasized that ... "to achieve these goals, partnerships are key, as they allow all parties involved to share and distribute information on best practices and access to resources and general knowledge to support the maritime sector's transition to a greener and more sustainable future. This slogan will enable a coordinated outreach and communication campaign by all stakeholders to highlight IMO's initiatives to make shipping greener."

The World Maritime Theme 2022 was adopted by the IMO Council during its 125th session, linking to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in particular SDGs 13 and 14 on climate change and sustainable use of oceans, seas and marine resources; SDG 9 on industry, innovation and infrastructure; and SDG 17, highlighting the importance of partnerships and means of implementation to achieve these goals.
