On September 26, 2024, World Maritime Day was celebrated under the theme "Shipping in the future: safety first", highlighting the importance of ensuring safety in a sector that is vital to the global economy. Throughout the day, various activities were carried out to raise awareness of the challenges and transformations facing maritime transport in the era of digitalization, automation and decarbonization.

As part of the commemorations, the IMO headquarters was illuminated in blue on the evening of 26 September. In addition, Member States and partner organizations were invited to light up iconic buildings in their respective regions to promote the message of maritime safety and sustainability. This initiative aimed to raise awareness of the need to prioritize the safety and security of seafarers in the face of global risks, including conflicts and attacks on maritime routes.

Similarly, in his official message, the IMO Secretary-General emphasized the importance of the maritime sector as a pillar of global supply chains. He emphasized that technological changes offer opportunities to address climate challenges, but reiterated that security must remain a priority, especially in the face of conflicts and threats affecting shipping. He concluded by urging all stakeholders to work towards safe, sustainable and prosperous shipping for future generations.
