WORLD CREATIVITY AND INNOVATION DAY

The United Nations designated April 21 as World Creativity and Innovation Day to promote multidisciplinary creative thinking, encouraging original ideas that encourage people to think differently and express a new vision on different matters. This date was approved worldwide at the 79th plenary session of the General Assembly through resolution A/RES/71/284.

Human creativity and innovation, both at the individual and group levels, have become the true wealth of nations in the 21st century, which is why the commemoration of this April 21 coincides with the birth of Leonardo Da Vinci, an icon of interdisciplinary creativity in the arts and sciences, considered one of the most creative people in history.

On the other hand, it has been proven that the most innovative people grow faster and this growth contributes significantly to the welfare of the population. In this contex, it is important to emphasize that creativity and innovation play a fundamental role in the solution of problems and in the economic, social and sustainable development of each country.

The maritime sector is no stranger to this concept. The application of innovative technologies within the maritime industry has been a clear trend during the last decade. Accordingly, the World Maritime Organization has chosen as its World Maritime Theme 2022: "New technologies for greener shipping"; supporting the development towards a green transition for the maritime-port sector.

Decarbonization, marine plastic debris and biofouling are some of the issues already being addressed in major IMO projects. All these projects aim to support and promote innovation and green technologies.

Globally, many companies and consortia are working on various innovations to provide green solutions and reduce ecological impact, such as: the redesign of combustion engines, the use of wind propulsion to limit carbon impact, the creation of rigid sail systems with integrated photovoltaic panels, thus combining solar energy and sail propulsion with energy storage modules.

In this way, the global maritime community is promoting the development of creativity and technological innovation, creating greater awareness of the duty of all those involved in the sector to provide green solutions at local, regional and international levels, exploring the best ways to meet the goal of achieving a sustainable industry and combating climate change through the decarbonization of maritime transport.
