VIRTUAL CONVERSATORY "WOMEN IN MARITIME SIGNALING

The Virtual Conversatory "Women in Maritime Signaling", organized by the General Directorate of Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine (Directemar) of the Chilean Navy, was attended by a large number of international participants and experts in the sector.

The event brought together women of different nationalities to share experiences and reflect on the challenges faced by women in a field historically dominated by men. This was explained by Commander Andrés González Peña and PR Valeria Rodríguez Burlada, Vice President of Red MAMLa, who highlighted the importance of integrating more women in the maritime sector by promoting an inclusive work environment that allows them to fully contribute, assume leadership roles and harmonize work and personal responsibilities.

The conference also included the special participation of representatives from the Uruguayan Navy, who shared their experience in integrating women into the Aids to Navigation Network. Midshipman Victoria Rouco and Midshipman 1st Class Sofía Papantonakis addressed issues such as the commitment to maritime safety and the difficulties of reconciling motherhood with their professional roles.

From Chile, several women of different ranks and responsibilities presented their contributions, among them First Lieutenant Litoral Katherine Caro Canales, who was the moderator of the meeting. Also, other outstanding members of DIRECTEMAR (Chilean Navy) related to the operation of lighthouses and maritime signaling shared their work experiences.

The discussion ended with valuable testimonies that highlighted the contributions and challenges faced by women in the Chilean Navy, becoming a space for dialogue and recognition, resulting in an event that not only promoted the importance of inclusion, but also sought to motivate future generations to assume key roles in an essential sector for maritime safety and management.
