THIRD INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S CONFERENCE "EMPOWERING WOMEN IN THE MARITIME COMMUNITY”

During April 4 and 5, 2019, at the World Maritime University (WMU) in the city of Malmö, Sweden, more than 300 people from 70 member countries of the International Maritime Organization - IMO gathered at this Conference.

On this occasion, various personalities from the maritime world have analyzed and discussed the importance of female labor participation in the maritime sector according to this year's theme of the IMO, based on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #5, "Achieve gender equality and empower women and girls".

 

Participation of representatives of the Maritime Authorities of Chile, Colombia and Peru.

During the Conference, several topics were discussed, such as: women in maritime leadership; women in shipping; women in ports; the role of women in maritime governance; women in marine science; advocating for the achievement of SDG 5 within the maritime industry; women in the fishing industry; increasing the visibility of women at sea; maritime safety and security from a gender perspective; empowering women in the maritime business; closing the gender gap in the maritime community; partnership and networking for gender equality.

Of great importance was the parallel meeting of the different regional organizations of women in the maritime sector, during which Ms. Helen Buni, Director of the Women's Program at the International Maritime Organization, encouraged an exchange of experiences among the different networks and officially introduced the LATIN AMERICA MARITIME WOMEN´S ASSOCIATION - Red MAMLa.
