OUTSTANDING PARTICIPATION OF COSTA RICA AND THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC IN THE 2022 OCEANS CONFERENCE
From June 27 to July 1, the Oceans 2022 Conference is being held in the city of Lisbon, Portugal.
This event, organized by the United Nations in conjunction with the governments of Kenya and Portugal, aims to mobilize, create and promote solutions to achieve the 17 Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
In line with the recent launch of the "Decade of Action for the Sustainable Development Goals" campaign, during this conference, relevant topics were discussed, along with the innovation in procedures and measures needed to achieve ocean sustainability. These solutions aim to develop a sustainable management of the oceans, incorporating the application of environmentally friendly technology and the innovative use of marine resources. Threats to ocean health, ecology, economy and governance (marine debris, pollution, illegal fishing, loss of biodiversity) have also been addressed.
Similarly, IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim, in relation to marine pollution, said "...the maritime sector is undergoing substantial changes. We at IMO are working tirelessly to ensure that the regulatory framework is constantly being improved and strengthened to meet new demands and challenges".
To further elaborate on these issues, IMO held the side event "Global Partnerships: Strengthening SDG 14 efforts in the shipping and fisheries sectors", where approaches, experiences and interventions to support regulatory frameworks within the implementation of the GloLiter Project were reviewed. In this meeting, our Alternate Representative, Paola Acuña Chacón as a delegate from Costa Rica, had an outstanding participation as an Invited Panelist in the Discussion Panel "GloLitter Partnerships: Example of Multi-stakeholder Cooperation to implement SDG 14".
Our Member Country, Dominican Republic, also had an important presentation at the beginning of the Conference, when presenting the efforts and progress that this country has achieved in environmental matters, was selected as Vice-Chair of the Oceans 2022 Conference, making it one of the thirteen nations that are part of this select group.
