March 23: WORLD METEOROLOGICAL DAY

To commemorate the launching of the Convention for the creation of the World Meteorological Organization - WMO, March 23 was established as World Meteorological Day.

The World Meteorological Organization - WMO, is the specialized agency of the United Nations dedicated to the observation of the state and behavior of the Earth's atmosphere, its interaction with the land and oceans, the weather and climate it generates, and the consequent distribution of water resources. Among its most relevant activities are:

  • Promoting in its member countries the establishment of an integrated Earth system observation network to provide meteorological, climate and hydrological data
  • The provision of weather, climate and water services to reduce disaster risks and assist sectors such as aerial, maritime and ground transportation
  • The creation of observation and monitoring standards to standardize data and statistics collected around the world.

In line with the development of its activity, the celebration of World Meteorological Day allows WMO to raise awareness of the importance of meteorology and hydrology for the environmental balance and all human activities on the planet.

For 2022, the theme chosen is "Early Warning and Early Action", and its objective is to emphasize the great relevance of hydro-meteorological and climate information in reducing the risks caused by natural disasters.

In this regard, the WMO states that "...being prepared and able to act at the right time and in the right place can save many lives and protect the livelihoods of communities around the world, now and in the future".
