LATINOAMERICA AND Red MAMLa JOIN IN CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN IN MARITIME DAY

In an industry that has historically been dominated by men, progress has been made by leaps and bounds in Gender Inclusion and Equity, which is why this May 18th, International Women in Maritime Day takes on special relevance.

Both, private sector companies and maritime authorities in the region, and mainly the IMO, have worked together towards a path of equity in the maritime, port and logistics sector, opening spaces for women, in order to achieve a real representation at the table where decisions are made and in all work areas of this industry.

It is especially important to mention the constant support of the IMO, which since 1998, with the creation of the Women In Maritime Program, established an institutional framework to incorporate a gender dimension in the policies and procedures of the organization, thus supporting the work of all women in this sector with the objective of ensuring professional growth and equal conditions.

In this regard, IMO Secretary General Kitack Lim stated that the commemoration of International Maritime Women's Day, "...not only furthers efforts to achieve SDG 5, but is a perfect follow-up action to the IMO Assembly resolution to achieve a barrier-free environment for women, so that all women can participate fully, safely and unhindered in the activities of the maritime community, including shipping and shipbuilding."

This month of May, Latin America and Red MAMLA join together to celebrate this important commemoration that enhances the work of women in the maritime, port and logistics sector in Latin America.

Come and participate in the events! Join us in this great celebration!
