JUNE 8: WORLD OCEANS DAY

World Oceans Day is celebrated today, June 8, this date was established more than a decade ago by the General Assembly of the United Nations with the objective of recognizing the importance of the oceans in the planet's life. For the 2021 commemoration, the theme chosen was "The Ocean: Life & Livelihoods".

The oceans regulate the climate, feed people, produce oxygen and are home to a large number of marine species. However, 80% of the pollution in the oceans is caused by humans and every year 8 million tons of plastic pollute our oceans causing devastation to wildlife, fisheries and tourism. Plastic pollution is costing our oceans the lives of one million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals a year.
