JUNE 21: WORLD HYDROGRAPHY DAY
"Hydrography provides the basis for all activities related to the sea", declares the International Hydrographic Organization, whose objective is to ensure the cartographic survey of seas and oceans, contributing to the safety of navigation and the protection of the marine environment.
For this purpose, in 2005, the United Nations (UN) promulgated the World Hydrography Day, which is celebrated every year on June 21, a date that alludes to the creation of the IHO in 1921.
Hydrography, the discipline concerned with the study of the planet's hydrological resources, has become a fundamental tool in the development of "the blue economy", guaranteeing freedom of navigation, the georeferencing of maritime infrastructures and transport, and the protection of the environment and marine resources.
In this way, the IHO seeks to actively support the countries of the world to develop and improve their hydrographic capabilities through collaborative projects with various international organizations and with the participation of the growing industry.
On its 100th anniversary, the IHO General Secretariat designated the theme "One Hundred Years of International Cooperation in Hydrography".
To commemorate its first centenary, the IHO held a webinar on "The Future of Hydrography and the Implications for the Work of the IHO". The webinar can be accessed through this link (Live webcast - available in French only).
