IMO TC 72/9/4: RED MAMLa PRESENTS REPORT OF THE IV REGIONAL CONFERENCE / III GENERAL ASSEMBLY AND ACTIVITIES CARRIED OUT DURING 2022

Within the topics covered during the 72nd Session of the Technical Cooperation Committee, our Member country Panama, as Permanent Headquarters of Red MAMLa, presented the report of the IV Regional Conference and the III General Assembly of the Latin America Women in Maritime Association along with the report of the activities carried out by the organization during the period from January to August 2022 based on the commitment to increase the visualization and participation of women within the maritime sector.

Regarding the information on the IV Regional Conference and the III General Assembly, held virtually on December 16, 17 and 20, 2021, the work and auspices of the Host State of Brazil, who carried out the development of the Conference with the presence of the representatives and members of the 19 Member States of the Latin American region, including special guests, among them the Chief of the Latin American and Caribbean Section of the Technical Cooperation Division of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), Mr. Carlos Salgado, senior officials from the Brazilian Ports and Coasts Directorate and the Central American Commission for Maritime Transport (COCATRAM), among others.

Among the panels that took place during the conference, the one related to "Women and the Merchant Market: Challenges and Perspectives" had a great impact on the audience, where industry exponents highlighted, among other details, the importance of carrying out a presentation process in schools, of all career options related to the maritime sector, so that girls and young people know all the possibilities of study and may be interested in being part of this maritime world.

On the other hand, the Mexican Maritime Authority through the Port Captaincy and Maritime Affairs announced its interest in being the Host State for the celebration of the V Regional Conference and the IV General Assembly of MAMLa Network, expressing once again the support of the government of Mexico to the objectives established in the SDG 5 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. On the occasion, the new representatives of the Executive Committee for the period 2022-2024 were also elected.

Regarding the work developed during the year 2022, Red MAMLa has increased its efforts to strengthen alliances with related organizations, signing cooperation agreements with its strategic partners to develop planned activities of common interest in favor of gender equity in the maritime, logistics and port industry such as:

  • Cooperation Agreement with the Central American Commission of Maritime Transportation (COCATRAM).
  • Cooperation Alliance with the Inter-American Committee on Ports of the Organization of American States (CIP/OAS).
  • Signed an agreement with Empresa Multimodal S.A.S. (EMMSAS) of Colombia.
  • Agreement with AAPA Latino
  • Agreement with Universidad Marítima Internacional de Panamá (UMIP).
  • Letter of Intent with Fundación ValenciaPort of Spain.

Finally, our Member State Panama declared itself proud to hold the Presidency and the Permanent Seat of the MAMLa Network, expressing its gratitude to the International Maritime Organization for the support provided to the Network and took the opportunity to invite the Committee to urge the Maritime Authorities of the IMO Member States to increase the participation of women in the maritime sector in order to increase the participation of women in the maritime sector, to increase the participation of women in technical discussions related to the maritime, logistics and port industry and to urge Member States to interact with the private sector in the development of training programs that involve training centers to provide students with the opportunity to interact with industry professionals during their studies.
