IN CHILE: FOR THE FIRST TIME A WOMAN TAKES THE POSITION OF PORT CAPTAIN
For the first time in the history of the Chilean Navy, a woman has assumed the position of Port Captain. Lieutenant 1° Littoral, Camila Ovalle Lagos, is the first female officer to take command of the Talcahuano Port Captaincy.
The officer, who also holds a law degree from the Universidad de las Américas, was a member of the first generation of women to attend the Arturo Prat Naval School. Throughout her career, Lieutenant Ovalle has stood out for her achievements, she was one of the first 4 Littoral Officers elected in 2021 to be Commander of an LSG unit, the General Service Boat 1621 "Quintero". In 2022, she was recognized by the Ministry of Defense during the National Day of the Cantineras, an event that commemorates the heroic participation of those women who supported military campaigns during the 19th century, such as the war against the Peruvian-Bolivian Confederation and the Pacific War, providing humanitarian and sanitary aid and, in some cases, fighting.
Lieutenant 1st LT Camila Ovalle said, "It is an honor and a great responsibility. I am deeply grateful to the institution for trusting me and I am proud to represent women in a historically male field. This shows that change is possible and that with effort and dedication, there are no limits to what we can achieve".
