25 NOVEMBER 2022: INTERNATIONAL DAY FOR THE ELIMINATION OF VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN
In 1993, the UN General Assembly issued the Declaration on the Elimination of Violence against Women, which defines violence against women as "any act of violence that results in, or is likely to result in, physical, sexual or psychological harm or suffering to women, including threats of such acts, coercion or arbitrary deprivation of liberty, whether occurring in public or in private life."
The adverse psychological effects of violence against women and girls, as well as the negative consequences for their sexual and reproductive health, affect women at every stage of their lives.
Violence against women remains an obstacle to achieving equality, development, peace, as well as respect for the human rights of women and girls. What's more, the promise of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to leave no one behind cannot be fulfilled without first ending violence against women and girls.
The 2022 UNiTE! Activism to End Violence against Women and Girls campaign aims to mobilize all members of society to become activists, stand in solidarity with women's rights defenders and support feminist movements around the world to prevent the rollback of women's rights and achieve a world free of gender-based violence.
As part of this campaign and the work for Gender Equality, Anne Hathaway, UN Women Goodwill Ambassador, during the B20 Summit in Indonesia (November 2022) addressed the leaders of the global business community to put women at the center of economic growth and join efforts to achieve gender equality, following the purposes of the Sustainable Development Goals, in particular SDG 5: "Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls".
