NEW YEAR MESSAGE FROM THE IMO SECRETARY-GENERAL
As 2026 begins, I would like to focus on something simple: getting things done.
At the IMO, this is the “Year of Implementation,” moving from plans to concrete actions and measurable progress, reflected in our World Maritime Theme: From Policy to Practice: Driving Maritime Excellence.
Seafarers—nearly 2 million people work at sea.
Recognizing that training must keep pace with the sector’s new realities, we will begin a major update of the STCW Convention on Training, including emerging technologies, new fuels, and evolving requirements.
Regarding decarbonization, we will continue advancing efforts to reduce the sector’s greenhouse gas emissions by or around 2050. Stay tuned for updates.
In terms of technology, all eyes will be on the completion of the code for autonomous ships.
And of course, the IMO will continue supporting the implementation of the High Seas Treaty (The UN High Seas Treaty), which enters into force this month (January 2026), underscoring our global commitment to protecting the oceans and biodiversity.
I wish you all a successful 2026 — and don’t forget to explore our new logo!
