Mexico is a bi-oceanic country with a privileged geographic position thanks to its extensive access to the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean Sea. It has an Exclusive Economic Zone exceeding three million square kilometers, which provides opportunities for exploration and conservation of living natural resources and hydrocarbons in its maritime zones, as well as significant mining potential for future industry.
On the continental side, Mexico has 11,122 km of coastline: 7,828 km along the Pacific Ocean and 3,294 km along the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
Mexico also has 117 ports and terminals, handling over 303 million tons of cargo in 2020. The country operates a National Search and Rescue System consisting of a Coordinating Center, seven Regional Centers, and 33 Naval Stations for Maritime Search, Rescue, and Surveillance, enabling the response to 597 distress calls in 2020.
The functions of the National Maritime Authority of Mexico are carried out by various divisions of the Secretariat of the Navy, including the Port Captaincies and Maritime Affairs Unit.
