WORLD MARINE AIDS TO NAVIGATION DAY
Founded in 1957, the International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities - IALA, is a non-profit association that provides technical advice to the maritime-port community through the creation of a series of committees that bring together experts from around the world.
Accordingly, at its 13th session, the IALA General Assembly decided to establish July 1st as World Maritime Aids to Navigation Day, taking into account that this is the date of IALA's creation.
The commemoration of this day was celebrated for the first time in 2019, according to Resolution A13-04.
The main purpose of IALA is to promote its work by creating awareness in the maritime community about the important contribution of Maritime Aids to Navigation (AtoN) worldwide, since they ensure the safe, fast and cost-effective navigation of ships, minimizing the risk of accidents, which at the same time contributes to the preservation of the aquatic environment.
Although unconfirmed, there are some sources that state that the first official aid signal to navigators was installed on the island of Cuba in 1764.
