WORLD MARITIME THEME 2023: “MARPOL AT 50 – OUR COMMITMENT GOES ON”
The International Maritime Organization has chosen for this year 2023 the slogan "50 years of MARPOL: our commitment continues". This slogan aims to highlight the history of the IMO associated with the work developed for the protection of the environment from the effects of maritime transport together with the commitment to the implementation of a solid regulatory framework.
The slogan based on the MARPOL Convention, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution of the Marine Environment from Ships, whether operational or accidental, is the most important international instrument on this subject.
On this topic, IMO Secretary-General Kitack Lim stated: "Much has changed in shipping in the 50 years since MARPOL was adopted on 2 November 1973, and IMO's commitment to protect and preserve the marine environment has remained unwavering. The World Maritime Day theme for 2023 will allow us to celebrate this legacy, while underscoring our dedication to building on existing foundations as we move forward together toward a brighter future... Our work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions is critical and, given the urgency of the climate crisis, we must act now to strengthen our ambitions in this area. We must also address other issues, such as biodiversity protection, biological fouling, invasive species transfer, and noise and plastic pollution. Protecting the marine environment requires shared action and I look forward to what the next 50 years will bring".
Moreover, the adoption of the IMO's Initial Strategy on Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Reduction in 2018 has set the policy framework for the development and adoption of new measures within the MARPOL Convention to increase the energy efficiency of ships.
Concordantly, this theme promotes discussions on the next phase of IMO's work to further protect the planet and the oceans, linking to the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and to the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), emphasizing SDG7: Affordable and Clean Energy; SDG9: Build resilient infrastructure, promote sustainable industrialization and foster innovation; SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts; SDG 14: Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources; and SDG 17: Revitalize the Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.
