March 22: WORLD WATER DAY
The celebration of World Water Day has its origin in the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, where it was proposed to consider a day to raise awareness of the global water crisis and the need to seek measures to address it.
Water is an essential element for the life of human beings and species on Earth, so urgent measures are needed for its conservation and supply.
Currently, an estimated 2.2 billion people live without access to drinking water, and the overexploitation of this valuable resource is leading us dangerously towards the depletion of the most accessible freshwater sources.
This leads us to reflect on the importance of adopting water measures, water sanitation and control over the exploitation of this resource, as it is a key element for economic growth and environmental sustainability.
For this year 2022, the UN has chosen as its theme: "Groundwater, making the invisible visible", to raise awareness about these invisible waters, which are found underground in aquifers, since most of the arid areas of the planet depend entirely on this resource, being decisive for the proper functioning of ecosystems such as wetlands and rivers. They also supply a large proportion of the water we use for consumption, sanitation, food production and industrial processes.
Thus, the call is to protect and use groundwater in a sustainable way to survive climate change and meet the needs of a constantly growing population and thus be able to achieve Sustainable Development Goal No. 6 of the 2030 Agenda: "Water and sanitation for all".
