WORLD WETLANDS DAY
The Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, especially as Waterfowl Habitat, better known as The Ramsar Convention, is the oldest of the modern intergovernmental environmental agreements. The treaty was negotiated in the 1960s between countries and non-governmental organizations. It was adopted in the Iranian city of Ramsar in 1971 and entered into force in 1975.
The main objective of this convention is "The conservation and wise use of wetlands through local, regional and national actions and international cooperation, as a contribution towards achieving sustainable development throughout the world".
Knowing that wetlands are extensions of land, which have the particularity of being permanently flooded, which can be: swamps, peatlands, marshes, coral reefs, mangroves, lakes and rivers, they represent very valuable multifunctional habitats, as they maintain biodiversity, provide water and other resources, protect us from floods, act as giant filters that alleviate pollution and help combat climate change, hence their vital importance for life around the planet.
A call to action for wetlands is the central theme of this year's campaign. It is a call to invest financial, human and political capital to prevent the disappearance of the world's wetlands and restore those we have degraded.
So, in the framework of this celebration and in order to contribute to Sustainable Development Goal No. 15 "Life on Earth", Red MAMLa calls to raise awareness of the importance of preserving and caring for wetlands, as exotic and magical places, where humans can reconnect with nature in a healthy, friendly and generous way.
