WORLD ENVIRONMENTAL EDUCATION DAY

The commemoration of the Environmental Education Day originated from the Declaration of the United Nations Conference on the Environment held in Stockholm, Sweden, in 1972, in which the importance of caring for the environment was discussed and the need to agree on common principles that would offer society an inspiration and guide to preserve and improve the environment was exposed.

Subsequently, in 1975, the International Seminar on Environmental Education was held in the city of Belgrade, where a document entitled the Belgrade Charter was produced, which states as the goal of environmental education: "To form a world population aware of and concerned with the environment and associated problems, and which has the knowledge, aptitude, attitude, motivation and commitment to work individually and collectively in the search for solutions to existing problems and to prevent new ones."

This January 26, after 50 years of the origin of this celebration, for Red MAMLa it is gratifying to be able to exalt the fact that the International Maritime Organization has chosen as its world maritime theme for 2022 "New technologies for greener shipping", thus affirming the commitment to rebuild a better and greener post covid world.

Among the main projects of the IMO is the reduction of carbon emissions, so it is worth noting that among the work plans adopted in June 2021 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, are included measures to encourage the transition from fossil fuels to low or zero carbon fuels to achieve the decarbonization of international shipping, as well as it is, the projects of marine plastic debris and biological fouling, all these aim to support and promote innovation and green technologies.

Red MAMLa joins the celebration of the World Day for Environmental Education, under the view of the Sustainable Development Goals No. 4, 13, 14 and 15, recalling the importance of preserving nature and its renewable and non-renewable resources, as well as exalting the efforts of the global maritime community in favor of the need to support a green transition of the maritime sector towards a sustainable future, leaving no one behind.
