Situado en la sección septentrional de América Central, Guatemala cuenta con 5 puertos marítimos y una línea de costa de 400 km bañada al oeste por el océano Pacífico (3 puertos) y al este por el Mar Caribe (2 puertos).
La actividad marítima está a cargo del Ministerio de la Defensa Nacional, quien ejerce y administra la función de Autoridad Marítima Nacional, a través de sus dependencias especializadas en el ámbito marítimo (Fuerza de Mar del Ejército de Guatemala).

The National Maritime Authority of Guatemala, under the Ministry of National Defense, exercises control over Guatemalan vessels and crews within national territory and international waters. It is responsible for navigation safety, maritime security, maritime space management, pollution prevention, and resource management, acting as the coastal, port, and flag authority.
That the Republic of Guatemala, through a well-implemented National Maritime Policy, becomes a leading country in maritime security, consistently upholding and rigorously evaluating compliance with the laws and regulations that govern the mission of the Maritime Authority.
To safeguard the safety of human life at sea by providing specialized training, with the aim of maintaining the international recognition of our seafarers, while ensuring the protection of our waters, the preservation of the marine environment, and the monitoring of maritime traffic.
